What is Shin Megami Tensei?

Shin Megami Tensei is a series in the Megami Tensei franchise and a follow-up to the Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei series of role-playing video games developed by Atlus. Its first game, Shin Megami Tensei, was released for the Super Famicom in 1992. The game expanded many of the same ideas and themes used in the original Megami Tensei video games, including recruiting Demons through Negotiation and fusing them. The Shin Megami Tensei games are also notable for their multiple endings determined by the player's choices, most often through the recurring Alignment system.
Since its inception, the series has expanded with the release of several other self-contained titles and related media. It has also spawned several other side-series, including the Devil Summoner series, Persona series, and others.
Certain games in the series, including Shin Megami Tensei if... and Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, are considered to be "side-stories" within the mainline games despite not being numbered titles. This is because these games were developed by the same staff and share similar themes to the series's mainline titles. [*]

Favorite Demons

Agrat bat Mahlat

was a queen of demons and a spirit of wisdom who commanded more than 180,000 malicious spirits in 18 legions. She used to ride through the air in her chariot leading smaller bands of angels of destruction. She was the main rival of Lilith during her time. She trained witches and procures succubi. Agrat is allegedly more interested in human men than women, or at least they are the ones who are strongly cautioned against her. Men are traditionally advised not to be alone, sleep alone, or enter the water during the times of the week when Agrat is most powerful, lest they fall under her spell. In the Zohar, she was one of the four Angels of Prostitution who mated with Samael.

Konohana Sakuya

Konohana Sakuya was the daughter of the mountain god Ouyamatsumi. When she became Ninigi's wife and grew pregnant on the first night of their marriage, he accused her of infidelity. She stood in a burning hut, claiming that the fire would not touch her if she had been faithful, and emerged unscathed. Her emblem is the cherry blossom.

Angel

Angels are divine celestial beings that have been recorded in various religious lore, mainly Abrahamic, who faithfully serve God. The term "angel" comes from the Greek word "angelos" meaning "messenger," as a translation of their name in Hebrew "Malach," this term is used both to refer to the lowest rank of angels and the heavenly host as a whole. Angel, however, is not their name as a species, but rather a description of their task, as angels are best described as "spirits." The origin of angels is up to debate, but some suggest that they were created on the second day of creation by God from either fire or light as a manifestation of his boundless love. In Christian angelology (the study of angels), they are said to inhabit the lowest sphere of Heaven, the sky of the Moon, while in the Quabbalah, they are said to inhabit the sephirah Malkuth and are led by the archangel Sandalphon. Their task is to protect humans as guardian angels and deliver messages and visions from God. Being the closest to humans, they are often represented in art as beautiful winged humanoids with halos, however, it is understood that angels lack a defined physical form and in scripture they often disguise themselves as plain humans in order to carry out their duties undisturbed.

Cleopatra

Cleopatra VII Philopator was the last active ruler of Ptolemaic Egypt. As a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, she was a descendant of its founder Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general and companion of Alexander the Great. While still young, Cleopatra's two elder sisters, Cleopatra VI Tryphaena and Berenice IV, attempted to seize the throne from their father when he fled to Rome for support against his enemies. Both women were brutally killed for their efforts, leaving Cleopatra as the eldest of her father's remaining offspring. Cleopatra heard of the arrival of the greatest hero of her time: Julius Caesar. Caesar came to Egypt in pursuit of his old rival and former son-in-law Pompey Magnus. She forged an alliance with Caesar to secure power and, following his death, joined the general Mark Antony in opposing Caesar's grandnephew and heir Octavian. After defeating Antony and Cleopatra's naval fleet, Octavian's forces invaded Egypt and defeated Antony. In the confusion following the battle, the lovers were separated. Antony, fearing that Cleopatra was dead due to a false report, committed suicide, learning too late that his lover had survived. Not wanting to be captured by the Romans, Cleopatra then killed herself, presumably by letting an asp (a poisonous Egyptian snake) bite her. After the death of Cleopatra, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire, marking the end of the second to last Hellenistic state and the age that had lasted since the reign of Alexander.

My first ever "Shin Megami Tensei" game... I remember back in late 2012 I was watching a Let's Play of Super Jeenius playing Persona 4 Golden. I was so intrigued by the tarot cards, the VN aspect + rpg gameplay that I ended up picking it up after christmas at gamestop along with a psvita. I was obsessed with it, playing hours and hours, falling in love with the characters and wanting to know how the story plays out. Once I finished it - I was in love and wanted to play more games in the series. I spent hours deep diving on what "smt" was and all the various side games that I felt so overwhelmed that I had let so many games go under my radar. In 2013 Shin Megami Tensei IV was coming out for the 3ds so I actually ended up playing that next since it would be a newer release. That's pretty much how I got into the series and even though I don't hold Persona 4 Golden as high on my faves list... it still holds a special place in my heart due to it being my first entry into the series.
